Update

“The best-laid plans of mice and men often go awry.”

~ From the poem “To a Mouse”, written by Scottish poet Robert Burns in 1786

I have the backpack that I want, I have my sleep system, quilt and pad, that I want. I have the shelter (tent) that I want, I have the cook system and the food that I want, I have the clothing, shoes, extra shoes, even socks that I’m taking. Everything. I have all of my gear dialed in and I spent the last year doing it. I’m ready to go.

I was supposed to be in north Georgia today.

Needless to say my Appalachian Trail thru hike attempt has been postponed … not canceled, just postponed.

I’ve already hiked 620 miles of that trail. I know exactly how very difficult it is. It’s incredibly hard WORK and takes a huge toll on your mind and body … especially your feet, knees, legs. I am under no romantic illusions whatsoever.

Just as a race car driver wouldn’t begin a race on bad tires, I am not willing to begin a 2,194.3 mile hike over hundreds of mountains through fourteen states on two feet that aren’t 100%.

I’ve been doing all I can do right now to deal with this plantar fasciitis in both feet. Physical therapy, doctor visits, stretching like a crazy man, foot analysis, insoles, new shoes, skipping great hikes with friends, resting. My understanding is it’s just going to take a little time. This stuff is really tricky. You simply can’t just stop using your feet.

I know a few people will criticize, judge, question. That’s OK, that’s what people do.

This is just another little speedbump in life. God knows I’ve had plenty of them. As for now I have a pretty good life, I live in a beautiful place, I live in peace, and I’m pretty damn happy. I have no reason to complain. It’ll all be OK. This too shall pass.

I’m learning a lot from this. When I do attempt the hike I’ll be smarter.

Thank you to my family and friends for your continued support.

Hope you all have a great day!
